Today's recently painted are once again for my Nine Years War project, they are two squadrons of the Dutch Horse regiment No 21 Ginkel.
They were raised on the 14th January 1625 and maintained by the province of Utrecht. Godard van Reede, heer van Ginkel became the Colonel of the regiment on 4th May 1665 and he was the only commander during the Nine Years War. In 1690 Ginkel became the Earl of Athlone and Baron Aughrim.
The regt came over with William's invasion force in 1688 and stayed in English service until 1697. They fought at The Boyne, Aughrim and possibly at Neerwinden and at the siege of Namur.
Hi
ReplyDeleteVery eye catching these chaps
Lovely job Ray.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteVery good looking unit.
Congratulations.
Mike
Very lovely cavalry Ray!
ReplyDeleteJason
Is that Athlone in southern Ireland, my parents were born there, nicely done.
ReplyDeleteOh I say Ray, they're a bit good. You must be pleased.
ReplyDeleteHi ray, nice figures. what rules are you using for this period? I am a big Black Powder fan and I keep revisiting the issue of cavalry unit size. 12 figures make a standard unit but six would make a small unit and allow more accurate brigade make up.
ReplyDeleteI do like these Ray. The horses are gorgeous and to have an animal so loayal that it will go into battle with you is amazing. Even the stance on them shows their nobility. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteYou're churning these boys out thick and fast, well done!
ReplyDeleteYou have a lot of unitscfor this project, Ray, and they are very nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words guys'n'gals!!!!
ReplyDelete@Fran - Yep! Athlone as where your Mum and Dad come from!
@Michael Awdry - Yep I am rather fond of them, hope they can kick some French and/or Jacobite butt!
@Leofwine Wargamerson - We use Beneath the Lilly Banners for this period, we've only had one game so far, they're very good rules though, they fit the period perfectly.
Ray,
ReplyDeleteHow can one keep up? I'm painting up a 12 fig unt about a day in preping for the GNW in 25's. Need about 2 more Swedish foot units and to work on some cav. Once that's done, then the Russians. Posted on your other page...finished up two Danish Dragoon flags, let me know if interested.
Hi Greg, Yes please I'd love the flags!!! You can send them to rousell68@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLovely work, Ray!
ReplyDeleteI like the drummer on horseback. Not something you see in Napoleonics!
Nice, Ray.
ReplyDeleteLookin just great mate!
ReplyDeleteChristopher

ReplyDeleteAnother fine unit for your project, Ray. Best, Dean
ReplyDeletenice looking unit!
ReplyDeleteVery nice indeed Ray. Your Dutch army is really taking off now. Splendid stuff.
ReplyDeleteGreat paint job ! Are they based for BLB ?
ReplyDeleteNice work Ray, Cav are looking good, basing is good too.
ReplyDeleteVery very nice Ray.
ReplyDeleteWHat can I say, very nice indeed!!! You are a painting machine Ray!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Very nice unit. Love the drummer on a white horse
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely on a roll - lovely figures & interesting history
ReplyDeleteAnother great post. Informative and with great minis.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking unit Ray. Any reason you keep your standards 'flat' rather than making them more 'blowing in the wind'? Just curious
ReplyDeleteI'm not keen on folding the flags for 15mm figures, when folded you can't see the detail on the flags and there's always a very strong wind blowin' when I play games it keeps them looking nice and stiff, only trouble the wind usually comes from Fran (TAL)
ReplyDeleteGreat looking unit
ReplyDeleteOne more time, a very interesting unit, for the paint and for the history...we want more!
ReplyDeleteFair comment Ray, thought you'd want to see the detail, some fold some don't. That wind can cause a lot of trouble you know. ;-)
ReplyDeletecavalry with guns, awesome.
ReplyDeleteLook good Ray bases really set them off!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cavalry unit - well done!
ReplyDeletetop notch work as ever
ReplyDeleteSeem to spend a lot of time catchin' up these days, but well worth it. Lovely unit and consistently good army being built.
ReplyDeleteGaz.
Very nice figures. Interesting style of painting.
