RP No 109 NYW/Jacobite Raperees

Recently on the League of Augsberg Fighting Talk forum, there has been a lot of talk about the up and coming supplement for Beneath the Lilly Banners, which concentrates on Ireland during 1689-1691. I can't wait for this to be released!!!!  There has also been talk of individually based figures for a new skirmish based set of rules for the period.
With that in mind I painted up 24 Rapereers, Raper what? I hear you ask???

From our good friend Wikipedia:

Rapparees (from the Irish ropairí, plural of ropaire, meaning half-pike or pike-wielding person) were Irish guerilla fighters who operated on the Jacobite side during the 1690's Williamite war in Ireland. Subsequently the name was also given to bandits and highwaymen in Ireland.

I chose not to base my Raperees up singularly, as with 15mm they can be a little fiddly to handle, (check out my FIW battle reports!) So instead,  I based them up on 20mm round bases, three to a base. I think It still gives them a distinctive skirmish look.
As no manufacture makes specific raperee figures, I trawled through Essex's website and bought a few random looking Irish and Scottish packs from their Medieval and Renaissance ECW ranges and some packs which are meant to be Monmouth's Rebels.
Only two pics I'm afraid, all the other I took didn't come out at all well!

  1. Very nice Ray! I quite like them on the round bases - it will certainly differentiate them from your rank-and-file.

  9. Ray, these look excellent. They were pretty effective in the War, weren't they. I'd certainly not want to argue with them!! I like your basing - they really stand out from the rank and file.

  10. Love the new backgrounds in these photos. And in answer to your question two posts back, yes, boobs was only number five. How 'bout that? Think those suckers would be at least in the top two posts.

Merry Christmas and Happy Oogie Boogie New Year.

  16. Great idea on mixing the troops and basing them like that, excellent stuff! I always find my photographing skills insufficient and half of the pictures usually get deleted.

    1. These came out really bad for some reason, I did take around 20 pics, then pick 5 or 6 good ones, but it was just down to these 2 and they're nit the best either! I should have retaken them, but..............

  21. Very good substitution of figures, they seem to do the job. I have to pick up those rules one day.

  22. Rapereers? You're well wide of the mark mate. It's 'rapperese', the doggerel used by Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog, L.L.Cool J, 2 Pac and the like. Although nicely finished, I'm afraid the figures look nothing like - no bling for starters . . . .

  31. This is one of my favorite "collections?" you've done so far since I've been visiting. So much to see and admire. My favorite is the dude, a farmer?, with a huge tree trunk in his hands. He is about to kick major butt! Great fun job.

Are you planting things such as whoopee cushions around work for Fran's return?

  35. lovely Ray,

I have a mate who collects pikes, especially Irish ones from the 1600s to the 1804 Irish rebellion here in Australia.

I have always thought about doing the 98, now LB rules may push me over the edge!

    cheers
    Matt
