I thought you were early Ray, then remembered it is "Sundayised" in the UK so as not to interfere with commercial life! In NZ and Australia, ANZAC Day is the actual day, 25 April, and if it falls on the weekend, we get a public holiday on the Monday. On the day itself, no trade is allowed until 1pm, with some small exceptions.
Keith, we (UK) do it twice really, the 11th is still the day remembered, when our public places stop at 11AM for two minutes silence, but the actual commemorations, by both Church and State use the previous Sunday for services and marches etc. No public holiday though. I wear the Poppy until the 12th. I like that you close trade until 1PM as it forces the entire country to be aware …… here participation, even in thought is not universal! I don’t know whether the reduction in poppy wearing directly corresponds to losing interest, but I fear interest is being lost.
Usually our Monday papers all have the commemoration taking centre stage on their front covers, but this year it has all been rather overshadowed by the BBC crisis!
Thanks Norm, I do vaguely remember from my distant youth in the frozen northern wastelands! I don't recall the actual day being as significant as Remembrance Sunday though. Interestingly, here Anzac Day is bigger than it was in the 70's and 80's...and, the 11th November has become more of a thing too, partly because when we had Helen Clark as PM, she put a lot more emphasis on it ,as her three uncles fought in France but were never anywhere near Gallipoli!
Veteran's Day? Or Fifth of November?
