BLB - Vienna 1683 - Bavarian Red and Blue Dragoons

The Blue and Red Dragoons? That doesn't sound very Bavarian does it?

In the 1683 Battle of Vienna, the Electorate of Bavaria under the command of Elector Maximilian II Emanuel provided a significant contingent of troops to the Imperial alliance to lift the Ottoman siege. Among these forces were two distinct cavalry units known as the Red Dragoon Half-Regiment and the Blue Dragoon Half-Regiment

Rather than operating as full standalone regiments, these dragoons were organized into two "half-regiments," each consisting of 4 companies. At the Battle of Vienna, they were integrated into separate cavalry brigades, The Red Dragoon Half-Regiment: Positioned under the brigade of Generalwachtmeister (GWM) Marquis von Beauvau, The Blue Dragoon Half-Regiment: Positioned under the brigade of GWM von Munster

They are of course Essex miniatures and like the last Allied unit in the series the banners are unknown so I've made them up, all on my lonesome!

  1. Excellent looking dragoons. One final push and you're finished.

    1. I agree! You are getting very close to the end. This is a concept foreign to me.

    2. Hopefully I'll get it all done and dusted over the next few weeks?

    4. The project is only finished once it reaches the table... then it's time to expand!

  2. I do like Essex miniatures and you always bring them to life with your paintwork. Smashing cavalry, and as always, I wouldn't have known their banners were made up if you hadn't said so. They both look terribly fitting for their regiments, imho.

    1. I love painting Essex 15's. They're so easy to paint up. Glad you liked the flags too!

  4. Great work Ray, and the flags complete them beautifully. Can I see the launch of 'Ray's Flags' in the near future?

  6. Great work Ray though I think you got the drummers mixed up 😁

Wonderful work on the flags. I am sure the historical commanders would have approved them. Considering how AI works I guess in a few years when someone googles for them these will be presented as the real ones. 😂

    1. I'm very happily nearing the end, but that doesn't mean I won't paint up more figures of course. I will need some Allied foot figures as this OOB only includes Cavalry!

  8. Nice work on these and also on the conjectural standards, Ray! When do you start work on your 2000 wagons for this collection LOL!

  9. they look great, Ray! I agree about Essex, very good to paint. Are you a 'black undercoat and leave a line between colours' man?

    1. I sometimes undercoat in black, depending on the uniform colour, I mainly use grey, red's and blue's paint over grey better than black in one coat, then block paint and ink all over. I can't be doing with all the fancy painting methods anymore, my eyes just aren't good enough nowadays.
