Keith from Bydad blog posed a question about the size of Redoubt Enterprises figures in my last post. So I've taken a few comparison shots of similar figures to give him and you fellow reader an idea of their sizes.
In the above pic from left to right we have
Warfare Miniatures Cossack, Redoubt Polish Winged Hussar, Warfare Ottoman Archer, Redoubt Pancerni, another Redoubt Hussar (on a different horse), a Foundry Pancerni and lastly an Essex Pancerni
Yes Redoubt are the largest, but do fit in well with the Warfare Ottoman range. Not sure if the Cossack is on a smaller horse by design or not? Foundry and Essex are tiddlers!
I thought I'd include a few infantry as well, just incase. From left to right.
Dixon, Foundry, Redoubt Janissary (the hat is lager that all the other figures, making it look bigger than it actually is), North Star, Warfare, Foundry and lastly another Dixon, but he's on a double base to make him a little taller.

That Dixon sculpt looks really good. I thought Dixon miniatures all had "pumkin" heads, but I guess I was wrong....perhaps a change in sculpting style at some point?

Not sure to be honest, they're quite an old range now? They do have BIG hands though!
DeleteHi Christopher - no change in Dixon sculpting, he does a range of heads that he mizes up in some ranges and I think one (perhaps 2?) of those heads might be the 'pumpkin' heads. I really like Dixon sculpts (even with the odd odd head) The malborough range is one of his older so some of the sculpts are not as good as other ranges but he has planty of pics so you can pick the ones you rate. Definatly worth a look...

DeleteThey are indeed (a great range) and I mixed them up with malborough range - my bad - no excuse as I have a soft spot for dixon miniatures so should have spotted they are from the Grand allience range.... (I blame old age)

DeleteThanks for the feedback. Ray! The size difference is more obvious ( to me anyway) in the infantry. Ignoring the tall hat and looking at the sholuder height, the Redoubt figure is significantly taller. His shoulders seem to be about eye height on the adjacent Foundry and North Star figures.
ReplyDeleteGotta agree, the infantry are giants and they only sell Ottoman infantry, no Poles. So for the infantry I'd suggest one of the other companies. But the cavalry fit in well.
DeleteThere certainly is quite the difference in some of them Ray. I'm not sure my OCD could cope fielding a force with such diverse sizes/heights tbh. Is this due to each company 'purposely' seeking out a scale which is unique to them, just how things have panned out over the years with different sculptors, or simply scale creep..?

DeleteNice to see the comparisons, the Redoubts are big lads but not too bad, I could live with the difference in size, must say I like the Dixon figures, they may be old but are a very nice.
ReplyDeleteThey are the smaller of all the ranges,they even look a little plain unpainted, but really come to life with a lick of paint.
DeleteTHe problem with all figures these days is that Manufacturers want you to buy their figures (of course) and hence the disparity in both style and proportions. The other problem of course is that without figures being an actual scal 1/60th, 1/50th etc. there is no comeback to the manufacturers when they quote a spurious (at best) non-existent 'scale'of 28mm, 15mm etc.

DeleteEssex and Foundry are more like true 25mm from what I've seen, but I don't think they look too out of place alongside the others if kept in their own units.
ReplyDeleteI mix them in as well Lawrence. In reality we're not all the same height, so why not figure wise as well.
DeleteI think the cavalry fit better than the infantry. Horses and people come in different sizes and the mix seems reasonable, even the larger horse.

Agreed. The figure on the right is a dismounted dragoon and probably the smallest figure in the range and he's double based too!
