I've made a quick return to my Battle of Vienna 1683 project in 15mm for today's post.
And start with some Saxon's, a small 6 figure Dragoon unit to be precise.
Now here starts the nightmare about Saxon Dragoons in 1683, what did they look like? what did they wear? Well they were two very difficult questions to answer.
Most info gives red coats, but they didn't come in till a few years after Vienna. Most of the info came from references during the Great Northern War, some 17 years after. But a did find a little snippet, but can't remember where, that gave a Dark Grey Coat with red cuffs for the Graf Ruess and Grey with blue cuff for the Oertzen Dragoon regt.
I chose the red cuffed Graf Ruess.
Again there wasn't any info on the flags so I'm afraid this is my best guess. Its the Saxon coat of arms on a white field.
The figures are from my goto for this period, Essex Miniatures.

They look good in those colors.
ReplyDeleteI think so too, Alex.
DeleteLovely looking Dragoons Ray and the uniform you have done looks great, I only really know the Saxons from the later periods so it's nice to see the earlier army take the field. The Essex figures look great.
ReplyDeleteI do like Essex figures, they're so easy to paint.
DeleteExcellent! What prompted the return to this project? Do you have a game on the horizon?
ReplyDeleteOne day, yes Jon. I wanted to get the whole 2 armies painted up during the Painting Challenge but failed. So now I want to finish it off before the next Challenge starts.
DeleteThey look great Ray and if you can't find info on their uniforms, no one else can tell you they are wrong!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Keith, that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.
DeleteVery nice, I have these in my GNW collection and went with the white flag as well
ReplyDeleteGreat minds eh, Neil?
DeleteI like the look of these guys. The red cuffs pop nicely.
ReplyDeleteIndeed they do, Dai. The dark grey makes thexred pop even more.
DeleteTop stuff, Ray. I like your choice of uniform and frankly don't think you can beat Essex for 15mm historical. I do wish they'd consider doing them as STLs tbh.
