NYW Flags - Earl of Leven's regt

A request for fellow TMPer OhBugger

He was after some info on the flags carried by the Earl of Leven's regt, during the Nine Years War.
So here's my take on the flags, not quite sure why they were never posted when I made
 them a few years ago??
I can't find my original master copy flags so I've used the flag from my file, so I'm
afraid it will blur slightly if you blow it up too big??

Jacobite Flags - Lord Bellews and The Lord Grand Prior's

4 flags plain and simple all made by my fair hand with a little help from the computer!
The first two are for Lord Bellew's regt and the two below are for
The Lord Grand Prior's regt.
Both units fought in King James' Army against the Williamites.

NYW Flags - Danish Foot Guards 1690

Here's my take on the flags for the Danish Footguards during the NYW, the flag can be seen flying high, in one of my previous posts here. I've leaned heavily on the flags pictured in "The Danish Army 1699-1715" by Sapherson, for these two flags, but I've not used the Order of the Elephant ribbons or the Danish Great State Shield,  that was used on their flag after 1693. Instead I've used the C5 cypher of the Danish king Christian V.

NYW Flags - Dutch Guard du Corps

I'm back at work tonight after 12 days off, so I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself, what makes it even worse is I'm working with that miserable git Francis............but at least England won!!!!!!!! Come on ENGLAND!!!!

I had a request from Mark, on the League of Augsberg Fighting Talk forum, for this flag which I'd inadvertantly forgotten to post, its for the Dutch Guard du Corps, during the Nine Years War.
The flag can be seen flying high on one of my previous posts, here.
The flag is very similar to that of the Dutch Garde te Paard, so it didn't need a lot of work to change it over!
Print off and use if you wanna!

NYW/Jacobite Flags - Earl of Tyrconnel's Horse

Not a lot I can say about these flags, that I haven't said already in my previous post. The flags are my interpretation of the flags of the Jacobite Horse regiment of Richard Talbot, the Earl, later Duke of Tyconnel. The symbol on the flag is that of the Earl of Tyrconnel so its a reasonable guess as to what the flags looked like.??

It's 2 am and I'm sitting typing this post at work with my new work partner, Fran, The Angry Lurker. Poor lads not that Angry tonight. Its his first night shift in about 3 years, so he's feeling the pain, I had to pass him some tissue to wipe the dribble from his chin! The betting's still on to see if he falls asleep, only another 4 hours to go!!!

NYW/Jacobite Flags - The Earl of Antrim's Foot regt

This flag can be seen in one of my previous posts on The Earl of Antrim's regt, that fought at The Battle of the Boyne, in 1690. I can't claim this one to be 100% my work. I used the flag made by Dan Harper on his blog Sixteen Ninety as a template and with a few tweaks changed it slightly. The second flag was pretty easy to make, usually the red cross is shown with no white background, but I liked Pete's idea from his blog Irish Army of James II, of adding the white background as it shows up the cross more and looks better.

So thanks again to Dan and Pete!!!

NYW Flags Jacobite Earl of Clanricarde

This is my version of the flag for the Earl of Clanricarde, that fought at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The flag can be seen in action in my last post. here.
Up next for my Boyne project are the Earl of Antrim's foot regt and Sarsfield's Horse, so look out for them soon.
I've also just finished some British artillerymen for the FIW, I've just gotta take a few pics of them and then I'll get them up on the blog.
Cheers!!

NYW Flags - Jacobite regt Marquis de Boisseleau 1690

1st Battalion The Marquis of Boisseleau regt

I'm planning on painting up some of the Jacobite units that fought at The Battle of the Boyne and at the Battle of Aughrim. One regiment that I will be painting is that of the Marquis de Boisseleau's regiment of two battalions. Unfortunately there is no record of what uniform, if any the regiment wore and what their flags may have looked like. After following the link on the League of Augsberg site, I decided to make my own version of the flag,  Hopefully some of you may find it useful.

NYW - Huguenots Flags revamped

There's been a lot of discussion recently on Huguenots flags and uniforms on the League of Augsburg Forum . Clarence is or has made a big selection of flags for the Battle of The Boyne, including Danish, Dutch, English, Irish and Huguenots.
In my first ever blog post I made some flags to represent the three Huguenots regiments that fought at the Boyne.  I've now updated these flags, here, adding a Huguenot cross to all flags. Barry and Clarence have been searching the web for coats of arms and heraldry to make their Huguenots flags, what these regiments really carried has been lost to history.
So trying not to step on their toes (too much) I've gone with a more simplistic view. When searching the web for Huguenots flags from earlier periods they seems to be a lot of strips, so I've gone with that effect, trying to make them look both French and English.
I've just finished painting up the three regiments myself and put some of these flags on the figures, so look out for them in a future post.
The green flags belong to du Cambon, the black belong to de Meloniere and the blue are le Caillemotte

NYW - Danish regt Prince George Flags

I've still not decided what way to paint Prince George's regt, I'm still leaning towards the green, cuffed orange I'm afraid. While the idea was ticking away in my noggin I knocked up the three flags in this post. The three flags appear in the Sapherson booklet, "The Danish Army 1699-1715. Again the Orange flag, (I seem to have a thing for orange at the moment), may be a little late for the NYW, but it looks great to me, so I may use it anyway!!!!!!!!

Gardes Te Paard, Portland's Horse Flag

I'm in the middle of painting up two squadrons of the Dutch Gardes Te Paard for my 15mm Nine Years War army. I couldn't find any commercially available so I made my own, sourced from, "The Dutch Army of William III", by C.A Sapherson.
Portland's Horse as they were otherwise known, after their Colonel Hans Willem Bentinck, the Earl of Portland, fought in the following battles, Seneffe 1674, Montcassel 1677, Saint Denis 1678, The Battle of the Boyne 1690, Steenkirke 1692, Ramillies 1706, Oudenaarden 1708 and Malplaquet in 1709.
I've made a guidon for the second squadron, I'm not 100% sure if this would have been carried but it looks good and you can tell the differance between the two squadrons.
I've made two different sets of flags for the regiment, the first is up to the death of Queen Mary on 28 December 1694, with the monogram, "RWMR", the second is after Mary's death with the monogram, "RWWR".
Please feel free to use the flags for your own armies, comments welcome good or bad!

Eppingers Dragoons Flag

Another new flag, I made this flag a couple of months ago, you can see it in action on one of my previous posts attached to the 2 squadrons of Eppingers Dragoons that I've painted.
I got the idea for this flag from an article in Wargames Illustrated, (sorry I can't remember which one), although they do point out that some sources say they carried plain black standards, I think it looks a little more colourful having the crown and monogram. I've included the regimental standard which may have been carried by the first company with the others carrying guidons.
The Regiment Garde Dragonders, to give them their full and proper name were raised in 1672.  It was in English pay between 1 January 1689 and 11 October 1698. During the Nine Years War, the colonel of the regiment was William III, Prince of Orange, but he was somewhat busy during the period to command them on the field, so that honour went to Colonel-Commandant Abraham van Eppinger.

Free flags for the NYW, Erle's, (19th foot) and The Earl of Derby's (16th foot)

I've been busy making some new flags for my NYW/League of Augsburg figures. There's no recorded flags for these 2 regiments, so I took my best guess, the regiments are Erle's, what would become the 19th foot and the Earl of Derby's regt which would become the 16th foot. Both regiments fought at the battles of Steenkirke and Landen (Neerwinden). The designs are taken from the coat of arms for the names Erle or Earl and Stanley the family name of the Earl's of Derby. Please feel free to copy them and use them for your units if you so wish. Comment welcome.

More of Mackey's Regt

I wasn't that happy with the Scottish saltire with coat of arms version of Mackay's flag I made in the previous post. So I again looked at the lovely photo's on The League of Augsburg website and decided to try and make the same flag Barry used for his Mackay's Regt. All I did was find the coat of arms for the name Mackay on a google link and with a little work tranfer it onto a flag template. Hope you all like it & please use the flag for your own armies if you so wish. If you do use any of my flags please let me know and send me some pics, just so I can gloat.....
Comments appreciated

Mackay’s Regiment Flag

On my workbench at the moment sits a half painted unit for my British army for the Nine Years War. Mackay’s Regiment. I needed a break from painting, my neck was killing me, so I moved onto the units flag, which like most for the period, is not known. I liked the look of the flag used by Barry on the League of Augsburg site, Link it looks like a flag used by the Stuart’s of Atholl in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, so I used that idea. For the second flag I used a Scottish saltire white on blue and added a coat of arms for the name Mackey, I think it looks quite effective. But for the total purists among you, it my cause a nosebleed, sorry!

If you want to paint the unit up and have no flag, copy this one with my best wishes.

Hugh Mackay’s regiment was part of the Anglo-Dutch brigade and fought at the following battles:

Killiecrankie 1689, Aughrim 1691, Leuze 1691, Steenkerque 1692 where Hugh Mackay was killed, Landen/Neerwinden 1693 & Namur 1695.

More NYW flags, Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt & George St George

I wrote a message on a forum a couple of months ago enquiring if anyone new anything about the flags for 2 English regiments during the Nine Years War.

No!!, was the answer, the only advice I was given was, “As nobody knows what they looked like, why don’t you make them up”. So that’s what I’ve done. For the sticklers among you, look away now, the flags may hurt your eyes and offend your senses. These are my simple versions of the flags and once again if you want them, take them!!

The regiments are Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt, originally led by Col Philip Babington , who led them at The Boyne, after Prince George they were led by Henry, the Marquis de Rada. They later became the 6th foot.

The second regiment is what was to become the 17th foot, originally led by Soloman Richards, then led by the very English named Sir George St George. Next in quick succession were the leaders John Courthorpe & Sir Matthew Bridges. The flag is made to represent the magnificently named Sir George St George. I’ve included two versions of the flag one white the other grey captains colours, as I’ve found conflicting sources over the colours of the regiments cuffs, which the flags are all based upon.

Sir William Clifton's Flag

Another dip into my files finds another two flags for the Nine Years War period, Sir William Clifton's regiment circa1686. The plain green flag is the Colonels while the other rather snazzy flag is a Captain colour. As far as I have found out this regiment might not be in many peoples armies, as they didn't fight in any major battles, (I could be wrong of course). They were present at Huy in 1994 & Dixmude in 1695, after Clifton they were led by Arthur Herbert Earl of Torrington, Sackville Tufton, Sir James Leslie  who led them at the above 2 locations and finally Emmanual Howe. Then at a later date they became they 15th Foot.
I'm not sure if I'll paint the unit up myself, but it was such a nice looking flag I had to make it.
So once again, help yourself to the flag if you wish.
