Turkey - Efes or Ephesus

Wow, what a place!
Luckily for me Efes was only a 15 minutes drive from where we were staying, not like Hierapolis which was a 2.5 hour drive away. But we picked THE hottest day of our holiday to go visit.
It was 48 degrees but felt like 50, I don't think I've ever felt so hot!!
I was not in Mrs R and the kids good books at all!!

This is the 4th Ephesus, the previous 3, were destroyed by earthquakes and moved. As was this one.

Government meeting area.

Used for meetings and political discussion.

The guide pointed this out, it was where a giant torch lite the street, the hooks, were for ropes to hold the torch upright.

The Doctors

And Chemist.

Nike

The Temple of Hadrian

Medusa keeping a lookout

The public toilet, try and use the first one, you don't wanna be using your sponge in the water the other 47 people have already used, yuk!

The library of Celus

The house of prostitutes was near the library, it was said there was a secret tunnel from the library,

"Just pooping over the library tonight darling, don't wait up!"

The market

The Ampithetre

The Theatre of Ephesus with harbour street. Due to ancient and subsequent deforestation, overgrazing (mostly by goat herds), erosion and soil degradation, the Mediterranean coast is now 3–4 km (2–2 mi) away from the site, sediment having filled the plain and the coast.

The green on the right are the remains of the harbour..

And that's it, Hope you enjoyed the pics?

  10. Wonderful ruins Ray, great photos. As for 50 degrees, how did you cope with that? WE experienced up to 38 in August living in Spain and that was unbearable, even the Spanish were moaning!

  11. You made me laugh Ray, saying it was 48 but felt like 50 - like saying it was 20 but felt like 22 - what's a couple of degrees between friends! That is pretty hot though!
Efes is also the name of a Turkish lager I can buy in our local Turkish restaurant - just thought I would lower the highbrow tone of the post a bit :)
Great pics and an interesting place to visit - I too like the idea of a tunnel from the library to the local knocking shop!

    1. That's what the guide said, it was mainly because of the heat reflecting off of all the marble straight in your face.
You can get Efes beer where I live. I never realised it was Turkish, I thought it was a Greek beer. And I never realised Efes was Ephesus!

  15. Stunning Ray. We had planned a trip to Turkey prior to COVID, but it got canned. This encourages me to look at it again...problem thing is that there are so many places to vid it and so little time!

  16. Fantastic looking site. I love visiting stuff like this when on holiday, but I think I would prefer April when the temperature is more reasonable!

    1. Agreed, it was mid 40's for most of the holiday, so was a bit intense. But its the only holiday where I've lost weight on, so that was a bonus!!!
