For my first post of this years Challenge, I've gone back in time to Greece and its mythology.
I'd take a guess that 99% of the people reading this post has seen the 1963 Ray Harryhausen film Jason & the Argonauts and were in as much awe as I was watching it? My favourite scene was always, the fight with the children of the Hydra. So this for me was a good start.
I've wanted to do these for a long time, but these infact are not for me!!!
My nephew Zach, who's 10 is really into Greek Mythology, thanks to the Percy Jackson books and films.
So I thought I'd paint him up a few figures for Christmas and see if I can get him interested in wargaming??? My Mrs said don't go too mad and buy too much........well too late.
He'll have these 11 figures and then hopefully help me paint up the last 11, more Argonauts and skeletons. Then the world is his oyster!!!

Laertes, Argus and Polydeuces
Jason, Melampus of Pylus and Augeias
I played around with how to paint the skeletons, in the end I painted them white and painted over a grey Contrast paint (sorry Ken), to give them that subtle shaded effect.
All of the figures are from Wargames Foundry, excellent Mythology range.
So 11 x 25mm figures @ 5pts each gives me 55 points! and all before Christmas day too!!!!

They're great Ray. I still remember seeing that film vividly, it was incredible for the time. And good work on inducting the next generation of gamers.
ReplyDeleteCheers Andy. He loved the figures, I'll have him gaming before we know it.
DeleteI LOVE stop motion and Tim enjoys Ray Harryhausen film Jason & the Argonauts. I'm a Harryhausen fan as well. Just great stuff. Happy 2026 to you and the girls.
ReplyDeleteCheers Ivy, have a great 26!
DeleteAn excellent start to the challenge, Ray. A great film. I'm sure that you and Zach will have fun gaming with these.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed, Rich!
DeleteExcellent first effort and you are on the board! Yeah, I bet most of us have seen Jason and the Argonauts.
ReplyDeleteIts a great film, that's for sure.
DeleteGreat work Ray, and like you, I love the 'Children of Hydra' scene in the film, whihc still looks super some 60+ years on.
ReplyDeleteCertainly does Steve!
DeleteLovely work Ray and a great way to try and get your nephew into wargaming
ReplyDeleteI hope it works. Certainly better than 40k or other GW stuff?
DeleteLovely work on these Ray, and a great gift for your nephew.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence.
DeleteGreat start to the challenge Ray and hopefully you will lure your nephew into the hobby with them! One of the all time great films in my opinion, still love it after all the years since I saw it first.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I watch it whenever I catch it on tv, even when its halfway through.
DeleteExcellent work Ray! The black and gold armor looks very nice.
ReplyDeleteCheers Chris!
DeleteExcellent job! And that was always a favorite movie of mine to watch as a kid.
ReplyDeleteA great film.
DeleteAnd back to my childhood I go. Lovely job. Trying to get my Grandchildren into this, but their games console attention span is sadly lacking.
ReplyDeleteIm hoping that doesn't happen with Zac.
DeleteThey look great! I remember those skeleton warriors well. I've never seen the whole film, but clips from it were a staple on 70s children's TV 'Clapper Board'...
ReplyDeleteOh wow David. You gotta see it!
DeleteI assume you’re going to leave a copy of Warriors of Athena out somewhere he can find it next year as bait?
ReplyDeleteHaha.....might be a good idea?
DeleteI like them, must watch the movie again, sheer nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteIts a fab film.
DeleteNice work Ray a start for your challenge 👍
ReplyDeleteYes indeed.
DeleteExcellent Argonauts and skeletons Ray!
ReplyDeleteThanks, glad you like them.
DeleteHappy New Year Ray - your Jason and the Argonauts look superb - you just need to throw in a few Amazons to complete the legend!
ReplyDeleteIndeed, there's plenty of other figures to choose from in the Foundry collection.
DeleteMan, they all worked out in ancient times; even the skellies have muscles!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
LOL!
DeleteAbsolutely LOVE those Ray. I am envious! It's that film that first got me interested in Ancient Greece. Can't believe David D hasn't seen the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteI know? Crazy eh?
DeleteWhat an amazing gift! I hope you are successful in kindling a love of miniatures and games in the boy...
ReplyDeleteMe too, Mike!
